the Macromedia Flash Player

with 5 comments

Since i can spend some time on R&D instead of project work, i can do some things i wanted do to for a long time. Better use that time wisely. I’m gonna bug you, the Flash Community, the next couple of days, with some questions.

If you have a new fresh computer, or just did a major cleanup, you could help me by going to the following page:

Macromedia Flashplayer Project.

I’m trying to find more information on what version of the Flashplayer is installed after a default installation of a browser, an Operating System or a Macromedia program. If you know anyone who could help me with this information, do not hesitate to forward that url. Thanks for helping me out!

If there are any Macromedians reading this. I have some questions for you too!

  • On this page, could you please add the following revisions of the Flashplayer: 7.0.14.0 and 7.0.19.0
  • While there, is it possible to add the original CAB files for minor versions instead of the EXE files
  • Is it possible to have a link to the FULL changelog for every minor version on that same page? I had to dig through blogarchives and rely on the Wayback machine to dig these up ( and yet still didn’t found every version )
  • Are there any penetration stats available, divided into Major/Minor revisions?

And to keep you interested, here is a screenshot of things to come…

  1. “On this page, could you please add the following…”

I can’t do that myself, but if you drop a note about omissions you notice into the “How can the document be improved?” field on most technote pages, then the word will be routed to the appropriate editor, thanks.

(I’d like full changelogs linked too, but right now the money to staff such work comes out of tool sales… it’s an ongoing struggle to get this prioritized against other needs.)

For major/minor stats, I know that some of the marketing folks have been working on revamping the whole stats thing, but I don’t know current progress yet. By now everyone knows that Flash has insane distribution, so the questions have changed from a few years ago. People particularly want more info about diverse audiences. Right now, the best I could suggest is to seed your own site with a little version-reporting SWF… this would beat overall consumer norms regardless. Sound good…?

  3. Thanks John, i submitted my request on the page. As for Major/Minor stats, i’ve been in contact with some high-traffic sites to gather more information on this.
